Now that our ACME stack has been installed, let's setup some isolated development areas. To do this, we need to create one or more Virtual Hosts in Apache and setup some local domains.
We're in the final stretch. We've got Apache, ColdFusion and MySQL up and running. Now we need a way to write some actual ColdFusion code in Linux. For that, we need the Eclipse IDE and a few plug-ins, primarily CFEclipse.
We've got [A]pache and [C]oldFusion installed so far. In part three, we're installing 64-bit [M]ySQL.
Since ColdFusion 6, it's been possible to run on 64-bit systems with 64-bit JVMs, just not officially. (If you're nice, I'll post how later.) 64-bit support was officially introduced for ColdFusion with version 8, but only for Solaris SPARC. As of the 8.0.1 release, Adobe gave us offical support for 64-bit on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.
I've always appreciated the effort that Stephen Collins put into creating The ACME Guide, which takes you through the steps of setting up a local ColdFusion development environment. This is my walk through of setting up the latest and greatest ACME stack under 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04.
After I got my laptop setup with ubuntu, my desktop started having issues. The main partition quit booting up Windows 2000, so I replaced it with a fresh install of Windows XP. After installing 16 essential security updates, Service Pack 2, 86 MORE security updates, then 2 more security updates, it was time to install Eclipse.
Thanks to the CFEclipse plug-in, more and more ColdFusion developers have been moving to Eclipse as their primary editor and IDE. The one complaint I've heard most often from people familiar with HomeSite, CF Studio and DreamWeaver is that there's no way to search for blocks of code. Thanks to Aptana, that is no longer a problem.
